December 7th and 8th finds a pair of seasoned side players creating their own limelight. Of late, Anthony da Costa has been on the road with Sara Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan, while Kimber Ludiker has traveled the world with stellar bluegrass band,Della Mae. He is the youngest winner of the songwriting contests at Falcon Ridge and Kerrville Folk Festivals in his mid-teens, competing against performers several times his age. She was named Grand National Fiddle Champion in both 2009 and 2010. Anthony has been writing his songs since he was thirteen years old. Kimber recorded using John Hartford’s fiddle, and is a fifth generation fiddler. Together, these fine friends bake a batch of music that far exceeds the sum of its parts. The First Thursday show is at the Cameo Arthouse Theater, 225 Hay St, Fayetteville, and begins at 7:30. Friday night you will find the duo in the listening room of the Poplar Knight Spot, 114 Knight St., in downtown Aberdeen for their 6:46 curtain.
The final show for the year is the epitome of what the Rooster’s Wife presentations are all about. Created as a convocation for artists and audience alike, the series began in December of 2006 as a house concert. The second show, held in an Aberdeen residence, introduced locals to a remarkable singer songwriter, whose unique stories were instantly accepted as universal truths. Jonathan Byrd’s narratives and social commentary resonate with every listener. Add to his potent performance rich guitar skills, and the accompanying play of master musician Johnny Waken on mandolin, electric guitar and saw. An amazingly similar experience occurs when listening to the poetry and prose of Canadian song writer Corin Raymond. The perspective is different, but the honesty and intrigue run just as true. The three weave a magical evening;the perfect way to close the performance space until January 5 when the Farmer and Adele make their Aberdeen debut.
